Why Is Building A List So Darn Hard?

Listen.. I’m pretty sure you’re going to relate to this…

I’m always reading emails from the  “guru’s” about how it’s imperative you start bulding a list. I don’t know about you, but these guys who have thousands on their lists obviously take the tact that it’s easy. Yeah.. well I say (expletive).

I’ve reads just about everything you can possibly imagine about building a list, and I keep coming back to one thing. It’s a whole different ballgame today as opposed to 4-5 years back.

Back then (which wasn’t that long ago) emails were a novelty. We would actually look forward to getting emails. Now when we get a full inbox I’m sure we all put out a collective groan.

I was overwhelmed with so many emails to read I just had to cull my lists I was subscribed to.

And if I’m doing it then so must plenty of others. Reading emails takes up so much freakin’  time  it really does keep you off track and off focus on what you should be doing - which is building your business.

The big gurus shoot each other an email when they are about to do a product launch, and presto! their launch hits thousands (pretty evident by the number of cut/paste emails I get from various lists).

We all know the benefit of a list, but with information overload, emails flying thick and fast to our in box (and we just ain’t got got the time to read every last word), list building has become a nightmare.

Quite frankly I stay away from lists now like they have the plague. If I need to keep abreast of what’s happening I just read IMNewswatch.

IMNewswatch gives me the heads up on what’s going on in IM circles and saves a hell of a lot of time reading emails.

Now… back to building a list.

Personally, I feel that emails will become a waste of a marketers time. There will come a day when we are all so over reading and replying to emails they will have lost their pull.

Any wonder why RSS has become favourable?

So what do I prefer?

1. Post good quality content to a blog (every day of you can) and offer an incentive (if you must) to get a sign up. If your site’s Alexa Rank is hidden in the millions of others then you are pushing the proverbial uphill with a pointed stick. Better to focus on becoming an authority through offering good advice.

2. Utilise social bookmarking sites and submit your site.

3. Post in forums.  And I’m not talking about IM forums. I’m talking about posting in forums in which you are likely to get customers. For instance; if you have a site which is for handcrafted jewelry components  go visit forums about jewelry making.  Atleast you have potential customers!

4. Use word of mouth. Tell your friends. When you send emails send it with an email signature for your site and get their attention. Be innovative with what you put into your signature tag.

5. If you sell a product JV with someone who is an eBay Powerseller.
For instance, if you have put together an information product to do with travel, JV with eBay Powerseller who sells luggage. Usually they will have a sizeable list to market to.  They just sign on as an affiliate and promote to their list.

If you have any other ideas why not share them by posting a comment. We all need as much support as we can in building our business!

Shorter URLS = 250% More Clicks

I receive a newsletter and CD each month from Derek Gehl’s Internet Entrepeneur Club, and this months newsletter contained an interesting piece of news about the length of urls.

It appears the results from MarketingSherpa’s lab tests conducted in 2007 for the 2008 Marketing Benchmark Guide asked real life business professionals to conduct Google searches. Among other results they discovered that executives are 250% more likely to click on an organic listing if it:

  • had a short url and
  • appeared directly below a listing with a long url.

With SEO in mind, keeping the url short can give you an big advantage over your competitors.

PPC Ads - Which Perform Best?

If you want to generate additional income from advertising it pays to give yourself a fighting chance by knowing what type of advertisements to place and where to put them on your website.

Every website is unique, however there are certain locations which lean towards being more successful.

Google’s AdSense ad locations heatmap shows these locations, with darker orange giving the strongest performance and fading to light yellow with the weakest performance.

Looking at Google’s AdSense ad locations heatmap you will notice:

  • Ads closer to the center of the page tend to perform better.
  • Ads above the fold tend to perform better than those below the fold.
  • Studies have also shown ads placed at the end of articles perform well, even though they’re below the fold.
  • Ads placed near site navigation or by images or other rich content perform well also.

    Google’s Adsense Heatmap

Margaret Holland, a senior account manager at Yahoo! Publisher Network, finds that “from a click-through standpoint, most publishers get the best results when they place a ‘leaderboard’ above the fold between the top nav and their rich content.” She finds the next most effective for click-throughs is the right-hand column or margin, especially with skyscrapers and vertical banners when placed next to the content in the main body. In addition, she finds that contextual square and rectangle banner ads within the center of the body content also do well.

The results of a poll by Yahoo! Publisher Blog via Your Ad Display Preferences dated January 26, 2007, asked where their publishers find the most successful ad placement, as shown in the chart below.

    Answer Response (%)
    Leaderboard 27.32%
    Right rail 9.28%
    Left rail 7.88%
    Embedded in content 44.66%
    Below the fold 1.93%
    Rotating positions 4.73%
    Total 100%

It’s most important to consider your users though, and their behavior at your specific site and with each specific page at your site.

The Ugly Truth About Building A List

OK, here’s the ugly truth…

  1. Most people who visit your site will not buy your product the first time and many will never buy from you.
  1. You do not need a giant list - just a targeted, responsive one.
  2. Even if you stopped adding subscribers to your list a good list can still make you money.
  3. The number of subscribers is unimportant. The quality of the list is important.
  4. Find something that will be of help to your market and then give it to them in exchange for their email address.
  5. Become their friend or an authority, but preferably both. It’s human nature to trust both.

What’s the formula for building a list?
1. Find something that will help your market and be of value, then give it to them in exchange for their email address.
2. Do it a lot.
Sounds rediculously simple. And it is!

What can you give away?

  1. Free Report - make it relevant to your market and make sure it delivers value.
  2. Downloadable audios - Talk to your subscribers. Let them know through a downloadable audio the information you have to offer.
  3. Do a video - Jump on the bandwagon and star in your own video. Your subscribers will forge a closer relationship with someone who they can see and hear. Video makes you real. As long as the video showcases something that your prospects can benefit from your good to go.

How do you set it all up?

  1. Use audio, video, teleseminars and emails. Emails are only one medium for communication, and if you want to build a relationship with your subscribers then they need to get to know you. Using audio, video and tele-seminars brings the ‘human” element to your subscribers.
  2. Give excellent value. Remember this… people are looking for solutions to their problems. They are looking for someone to show them how to solve them so they can move forward.
  3. Be a straight shooter. Keep the hype to a minimum (hype and scepticism goes hand in hand).
  4. Be different. Being different makes you stand out in the crowd. Be innovative.
  5. Help people decide they want your stuff instead of convincing them.

Above all remember this: The money is NOT in the list. The money is in the relationship with your list.

Where do you get traffic?
If your penny poor and time rich you are going to have to spend quite a bit of time submitting articles to article directories, getting backlinks, posting in forums, adding your site to social bookmarking sites, or you could….
